I looked at her eyes and saw hurt
I saw her soul waving through pain
I saw sorrow and tiredness
I saw someone fighting sickness and misery
Someone who had enough of this life
Yet, she was fighting back
But her army was not as strong as the enemy
An enemy that ravages anything and everything
An unquenchable heartless enemy sucking life out of her
She was trying to retaliate but it got the best of her
She had it inside her belly and the pain was unbearable
She preferred standing up cause she knows,
She knows, if she lays down, it means it is too late
It means that she would lose the battle of her life
She would lose everything she ever fought for
All of the journey, the traveling road, the visions of beauty
The odd disruptions, the people she loved
It would all be gone by a drop of a dime
Unfortunately, I got home after she lost a couple of fights
I heard her crying and I wanted to believe it was not her
I wanted to believe it was someone drunk puking outside
I opened the door and she saw me from the other side of the garden
I called her name, hoping she would respond by barking and jumping,
Like she always does when she knows I need her love and affection
Then, I saw her coming towards me, slowly dragging her legs
Lifeless, head down, dropping saliva as she walked towards me
I ran upstairs to call my uncle to ask him what happened
By the time I finished the call, she managed to make it up the stairs
The twenty-one steps that she used to jump three at a time when we played,
Now it took her some time to make it to the top
She was exhausted, frazzled and drooling saliva unwillingly
I asked her to lay down, but her stomach was hurting so much
It was wounded from the inside and she preferred to stand up
Fearing that laying down would worsen her situation

I went back inside to look for something to comfort her
Then, she started crying out loud again like a baby in pain
Her sobbing was so heartbreaking making me realize it was too late
It was too late at night to go to the vet
It was too late to ask for a miracle to saver her life
The only way to salvation was -unavoidably- death
I hoped it was just a tribulation that she will get through
Like the strong fighter, she always was
Like the strong soldier who’s only motto is to conquer the enemy
Unfortunately, it was not just another adversity or ordeal
It was her last fight after losing multiple combats
It was her last fight in this hideous life
It was the mightiest blow life can throw at angels
A blow that started with a pan stomach ache
And ended with a gulp of blood she spits off
When I saw her laying down on the soil,
I realized she had enough battling the hostile enemy
I wanted her to cling onto life with her four pows
But she was way too weak despite her strong stamina
I kneeled down to help her take her last breaths
She looked at me with her hazel angelic eyes
And I saw pain and bitterness through her look
She knew she fought fiercely, but the enemy was too mischievous
After years of standing tall in her corner,
Life has landed the final punch to her stomach
She shuddered and spit off the last gulp of blood
Letting out a deep lethal sigh after a feisty war
I busted into tears, seeing her wilting and fading out
She was too ethereal to continue her journey on earth
In peace, may you leave this shore
In love may you find the next
Safe passage on your travels
May we meet again Laura.
Yours,
Abdelkader.
